Fun and frolics at captain's day

9:36am Saturday 19th July 2008

THE Incredible Hulk, Hulk Hogan and the shaggy-haired runners from the 118 118 adverts were all let loose around Wrag Barn last weekend for a Captain's Day the members will never forget, writes GARETH MOORHOUSE.

Skipper Rod Grinsted played host to a day of fun, frolics and fancy dress on the fairways of the Highworth course to raise money for his chosen charity, Sobell House.

The morning Gruesome Greensome produced some interesting scores, with the 120 players also taking part in the persimmon and left-handed driving challenges on the 1st and 10th holes.

In the afternoon stableford, the introduction of the double point scoring Pink Ball' added a little more pressure as the members took turns to use it every fourth hole.

Resident club maker Mark Shipley organised the 1000cc driver challenge, with shot of the day a 265-yard effort by guest Nigel Lawton from Studley Wood Golf Club.

A total of £1,400 was raised through raffle ticket sales, the driving challenge and money collected from those missing the green on the par threes, taking the total raised for Sobell House to well over £8,000.

The evening function was attended by 168 members, guests and friends, where Rory The Incredible Hulk' O'Neill picked up the Trinny & Susannah prize for best dressed.
