THE final bell has sounded at a Swindon infants' school.

Since 1907 pupils have attended an infants' school in Ferndale.

But yesterday, that long tradition came to a close when the infant school had its last day.

From September, pupils will still attend the same buildings, but their school will be the Ferndale Community Primary School.

It will serve youngsters in reception up to Year 6 and will be open to youngsters aged four to 11 at the beginning of the next school year.

To mark the end of the era, pupils took part in numerous activities.

As well as special appearances by the police and fire brigade, there were governors dressed up as Sponge Bob Square Pants and Scooby-Doo.

The day also saw a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the school's new play area, which includes a pond and climbing gym and a party for parents and staff.

Some of the 147 children, who were out in fancy dress, said they had mixed feelings about the day because although it would mean a new amalgamation it would also mean there would be no more infant school.

Amber Goodwin, seven, a Year 2 from Rodbourne, said she was excited about the party.

She said: "I am really excited because there was a huge party and soon the schools will be joining together.

"I also can't wait until school is over."

Joseph Glee, seven, a Year 2 from Ferndale, said he will miss the old infant school.

He said: "I am a little happy but a little sad too.

"I am excited that things will change but I will also miss the infant school."

School governors also celebrated the merger having spent the last few months coordinating a new board of 11 members made up from infant and junior school governors.

Assistant headteacher Mandy Cook, who will be in the same role when the schools join, said the move is a good one.

She said: "It is a really exciting day for all children and the staff and governors because it is finishing off the school on a good note and will help us to remember all the good things about Ferndale infants."
