HOWARD Moscrop may well be in the running for Swindon's Man of the Year for 2008. His new world record of 56.56s in the highly technical 400m hurdles is extremely impressive for a 50-year-old senior athlete (SA World Beater, p36, July 8).

Back in Barcelona olympics of 1992 Kevin Young ran the current world record of 46.78s. (Sir) David Hemery won the gold medal for Great Britain in 1968 at altitude in Mexico with a time of 48.12s.

It would be interesting to see a race between Mr Moscrop and the peerless Edwin Moses. Moses was Olympic champion in 1976 and 1984 and only the US boycott of 1980 prevented a possible hat trick. He was unbeaten for ten years with a record 122 consecutive wins. Moses is now 52-years-old.
